What’s Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)?

Posted by:  :  Category: Medicare

Some Medigap policies also offer coverage for services that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S. If you have Original Medicare and you buy a Medigap policy, Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered health care costs. Then your Medigap policy pays its share.

As long as you enroll during this six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, the insurance company cannot refuse to sell you a Medigap policy, charge you more because you have health problems, or make you wait for coverage to begin. However, you may have to wait up to six months for coverage of a pre-existing condition. Original Medicare will still cover that health problem even if your Medicare Supplement plan doesn’t cover your out-of-pocket costs.

Does Medicare Cover Children?

Posted by:  :  Category: Medicare

Medicaid, however, is a different federal health insurance program which can cover children if their families have low income and few assets other than their home. If a family qualifies for Medicaid coverage, almost all of a child’s health care needs can be paid for, with only very small copayments by the family. To find out more about eligibility for Medicaid for children, and to find out about specific programs that expand coverage to children beyond standard Medicaid coverage, go to the Medicaid page of the web site of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The Medicare Catastrophic Coverage Act of 1988 added a limited range of Medicaid benefits to a group of eligible persons called Qualified Medicare Beneficiaries (QMB). In 1990, Congress increased Medicare cost-sharing amounts to a group called Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiaries (SLMB).  There is also a group know as Qualified Individuals (QI-1). People in these groups who have Medicare Hospital Insurance (Part A) and income and resources that place them in one of these three groups can receive help with the payment of their Medicare premiums and, in some cases, their deductibles & co-payments for the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Medicare Part D).
