What’s Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)?

Some Medigap policies also offer coverage for services that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S. If you have Original Medicare and you buy a Medigap policy, Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered health care costs. Then your Medigap policy pays its share.

Retiree Health Benefits At the Crossroads

Posted by:  :  Category: Medicare

Prescription Drug Coverage.  With respect to prescription drugs, employer plans typically provide prescription drug coverage in conjunction with other medical benefits, and often these benefits are more generous than the standard Part D benefit (e.g., no coverage gap).  Employers have the option to provide prescription drug benefits directly through an  employer plan and receive a federal retiree drug subsidy (RDS) payment for offering qualified prescription drug coverage (that is, coverage that is at least equivalent to the Part D standard benefit).  Alternatively, the employer may contract with a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan (PDP) on a group basis to provide prescription drug coverage to Medicare-eligible retirees, for which the employer pays a negotiated premium in addition to what the PDP receives from Medicare under Part D.  Often the Part D plans receive a waiver from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to provide coverage exclusively to the employer group and the employer plan separately supplements the Part D plan benefits, a combination known more technically as Medicare Part D Employer Group Waiver Plans (EGWP) plus Wrap.  Under these arrangements, employers contract with a Medicare Part D plan to provide benefits solely to the employer’s retirees, based on the standard benefit design, and the employer offers a secondary plan that supplements the first (waiver) plan to provide more generous drug coverage.

Medicare Supplement Comparison Chart

Posted by:  :  Category: Medicare

Although there are several plans to choose from, comparing and contrasting Medicare Supplement Plans (also called Medigap) is relatively simple. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has designed all Medicare Supplement Plans currently available. There are a total of 10 plans, and they are set up in a letter system ranging from “Plan A” to “Plan N”. All 10 Medigap plans are “Standardized”, meaning if you compared one particular letter plan, with another plan of the same letter offered by a different insurance company, the benefits would be identical. The only difference between companies is the price they charge.

Popular Plan F & G

Year after year we have found Medicare Supplement Plan F or Medicare Supplement Plan G to be the best value for the dollar. The new Plan N is a great alternative to a Medicare Advantage plan.  Plan N might be recommended depending on which state you live in and how much the supplement cost in relation to available Medicare Advantage plans. A plan N will provide more coverage and a very reasonable premium. In Florida we have the lowest rate for plan F & plan N. See the Medicare Supplement Plan chart below. In general, the higher you go up in the plan chart the more Gaps the plan fills. Medicare Supplement Plan F is the most comprehensive supplement plan and there is not a better plan than F. Most people will select a Plan F. However, depending on your personal situation there may be a more cost efficient choice.

Medicare Supplement Insurance

To help consumers understand and compare Medicare Supplement insurance plans (Medigap plans), the 10 available policies were standardized by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). These standards can be found in NAIC’s Medicare Supplement Insurance Minimum Standards Model Act. The 10 Medigap plans have letter designations ranging from A to N, each with a set of basic and extra benefits. The combination of benefits in each plan may not be altered by insurers, nor may the letter designations be changed. Three states – Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin are referred to as waiver states because they are permitted by statute to have different standardized Medigap plans.

The drug Tier is shown to the left of this column. These cost sharing figures DO NOT necessarily apply to the Coverage Gap. The plan may have a separate copay/coinsurance for the same drug while in the Coverage Gap. There are two figures shown under this “Cost Sharing” category:

While you might not really need to replace a lost Social Security card, as a Medicare beneficiary, your red, white, and blue Medicare card is the most piece of information you own. Medicare Advantage 2014 Spotlight: Enrollment Market Update

Posted by:  :  Category: Medicare

Average monthly premiums (weighted by enrollment) have remained relatively stable since 2012 ($35 per month in 2014).   During this same period, however, average out-of-pocket spending limits have been on the rise, which could expose a subset of enrollees to higher costs – mainly those who have significant medical needs.   Medicare Advantage plans, unlike traditional Medicare, are required to limit out-of-pocket costs for services covered under Parts A and B ($3,400 is recommended; $6,700 is the maximum).   Between 2013 and 2014, the share of Medicare Advantage enrollees in plans with limits above $5,000 almost doubled, from 24 percent in 2013 to 44 percent in 2014. This Data Spotlight reviews national and state-level enrollment trends as of March 2014 and examines variation in enrollment by plan type and firm. It also analyzes the most recent data on premiums, out-of-pocket limits and prescription drug coverage in the Part D “donut hole” for Medicare Advantage enrollees.

Medicare Advantage 2015 Spotlight: Enrollment Market Update

While Medicare Advantage enrollment is increasing in many states, in 6 states (AK, DE, MD, NH, VT and WY) less than 10% of beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans in 2015, which was also the case in at least the prior three years (Figure 5). In contrast, in 22 states (versus 18 states in 2014 and 15 states in 2013) more than 30 percent of beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans in 2015. Additionally, in 5 states (FL, HI, MN, OR, and PA) more than 40 percent of beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans, and Medicare Advantage enrollment these states account for 6% of all Medicare beneficiaries and 21% of all Medicare Advantage enrollees. This variation reflects the urban origins of health maintenance organizations (HMOs) in Medicare Advantage and other factors, such as the history of managed care in the state and the prevalence of employer sponsored insurance for retirees. Within states, Medicare Advantage penetration varies across counties. For example, 43 percent of beneficiaries in Los Angeles County, California are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans compared to only 8 percent of beneficiaries in Santa Cruz County, California.

Compare Medicare Advantage & Supplemental Plans

Medicare Advantage insurance is offered by private insurance companies with a Medicare contract, and replaces Original Medicare Part A and Part B. You must continue to pay your Part B premiums. Medicare Advantage plans typically offer additional benefit options and have less cost-sharing than Original Medicare, and you may have to pay a monthly premium in return for the extra benefits. Medicare Advantage plans come in a variety of formats, such as HMO, PPO and PFFS plans, as well as special needs plans. Medicare beneficiaries can enroll in Medicare Advantage plans if they have Medicare Part A and Part B, but only during designated enrollment periods. These enrollment periods change from time-to-time, so please call us to get the most-up-to-date information.

Everything you need to know about Medicare Advantage this open enrollment season

Nearly all Medicare users stay with the plans they already have. Experts say that many if not most of them could save money and improve the quality of their health coverage by changing to new health plans during open enrollment. For 2016, drug plans in particular will be more expensive, as explained in last week’s Ask Phil. Looking only at the health component of Medicare Advantage plans, only modest cost changes are expected next year, with leading Medicare Advantage insurers emphasizing the stability of their plan offerings and premiums from 2015 to 2016.

Cigna Medicare Supplement Insurance

Although any of these Cigna Medicare supplement plans will provide great protection, Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan F covers the fullest range of coinsurance, deductibles, and excess charges that otherwise would have to be paid out of pocket. It covers the blood that basic Medicare does not cover, and provides a full extra year of hospitalization coverage. Plan F also covers skilled nursing service and approved health care costs you incur while traveling outside the United States. It even allows you to choose any doctor who accepts Medicare. With fixed premiums and generally no unexpected out-of-pocket costs, Plan F is the Medigap plan chosen by nearly half of Americans who purchase Medicare supplement insurance plans.
