Medicaid: Health Insurance for Low Incomes

Posted by:  :  Category: Medicare

Although the federal government sets up general guidelines which were expanded under the Affordable Care Act, each state runs its own Medicaid program. States establish much of what health care services are covered and which groups of people get coverage. As a result, Medicaid programs vary a great deal from state to state.

Medicaid (Eligibility, Benefits, Regulations)

A Dr. Mike definition: Federal Poverty Level – At the beginning of each year, the federal government releases an “official” income level for poverty. This amount is the minimum yearly income that an individual or family needs to be able to provide for basic needs such as food and housing. The actual dollar amount changes each year and varies based on the number of people in a family. The Federal Poverty Level is used to determine someone’s eligibility for government programs such as Medicaid.

Your Medicare Supplemental Insurance Information

Posted by:  :  Category: Medicare

Every Medicare Supplemental insurance policy, in order to be designated a “Medicare supplemental” or “Medigap” insurance plan, plan has to follow federal and state laws designed to make the buying process easier for the consumer. Medigap insurance companies can only sell you a “standardized” Medigap policy identified by letters A, B, C, D, F, High-Deductible F, G, K, L, M and N. Each standardized Medigap policy must offer the same basic benefits, no matter what insurance company sells it. Cost is usually the only difference between Medigap policies sold by different insurance companies. (You should, however, compare insurance companies on other measures such as customer service and reputation.)

If you enroll during this six month window, the insurance company cannot refuse to cover you. However, if you have a pre-existing condition, the insurance company may make you wait up to six months for coverage for your pre-existing condition to begin (although your coverage through Original Medicare will be in effect).

A plan N will provide more coverage and a very reasonable premium. In Florida we have the lowest rate for plan F & plan N. See the Medicare Supplement Plan chart below. In general, the higher you go up in the plan chart the more Gaps the plan fills. Medicare Supplement Plan F is the most comprehensive supplement plan and there is not a better plan than F. Most people will select a Plan F. However, depending on your personal situation there may be a more cost efficient choice.

Shingles Vaccine Protects Seniors and Is Covered by Medicare

Posted by:  :  Category: Medicare

Shingles Overview Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a burning, blistering, often excruciating skin rash that affects about 1 million Americans each year. The same virus that causes chickenpox causes it. What happens is the chickenpox virus that most people get as kids never leaves the body. It hides in the nerve cells near the spinal cord and, for some people, emerges later in the form of shingles.

Shingles Vaccine Medicare Coverage and Cost Information

Shingles, or Herpes zoster, is caused by the same virus (varicella zoster, VZV) that causes chickenpox. It is characterized by pain, red rash, and painful fluid filled blisters. The virus is never eliminated from the body, but instead lives in a dormant stage in the nervous system. The virus can be reactivated when the person is subject to prolonged stress, or through the treatment certain illnesses such as cancer. Getting vaccinated with Zostavax, a chickenpox booster, can help prevent it’s painful occurrence, as well as reduce the risk of complications such as posterherpetic neuralgia.

Social engineering (security)

The 1999 “GLBA” is a U.S. Federal law that specifically addresses pretexting of banking records as an illegal act punishable under federal statutes. When a business entity such as a private investigator, SIU insurance investigator, or an adjuster conducts any type of deception, it falls under the authority of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). This federal agency has the obligation and authority to ensure that consumers are not subjected to any unfair or deceptive business practices. US Federal Trade Commission Act, Section 5 of the FTCA states, in part: “Whenever the Commission shall have reason to believe that any such person, partnership, or corporation has been or is using any unfair method of competition or unfair or deceptive act or practice in or affecting commerce, and if it shall appear to the Commission that a proceeding by it in respect thereof would be to the interest of the public, it shall issue and serve upon such person, partnership, or corporation a complaint stating its charges in that respect.”

Social networking service

At the forefront of emerging trends in social networking sites is the concept of “real-time web” and “location-based.” Real-time allows users to contribute contents, which is then broadcast as it is being uploaded – the concept is analogous to live radio and television broadcasts. Twitter set the trend for “real-time” services, wherein users can broadcast to the world what they are doing, or what is on their minds within a 140-character limit. Facebook followed suit with their “Live Feed” where users’ activities are streamed as soon as it happens. While Twitter focuses on words, Clixtr, another real-time service, focuses on group photo sharing wherein users can update their photo streams with photos while at an event. Facebook, however, remains the largest photo sharing site – Facebook application and photo aggregator Pixable estimates that Facebook will have 100 billion photos by Summer 2012 .

What’s Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)?

Posted by:  :  Category: Medicare

Some Medigap policies also offer coverage for services that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S. If you have Original Medicare and you buy a Medigap policy, Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered health care costs. Then your Medigap policy pays its share.

The Kaiser Family Foundation also says that plans and costs are bound to differ wildly in different areas of the country or even regions of the same state. Available plans and premiums can differ when you cross a ZIP code boundary or into a new county. The key is to find different options in your local area and select the one that suits your needs and budget the best. Your own right choice will depend upon the premium, options available in your town or city, the network of medical providers, covered benefits and benefit amounts, and the potential for out of pocket costs.

Filing a Medicare Claim and Checking the Status

If you have Original Medicare, the amount you pay at the time you receive a health service will depend on whether your doctor is a Medicare-participating provider and accepts assignment. Medicare-participating providers are on contract with Medicare to accept and treat patients for all Medicare-covered services and supplies. A provider that accepts assignment agrees to accept the Medicare-approved amount as full payment for a covered service or supply. In this instance, the provider is required to file Medicare claims for any services you received, and Medicare will pay the provider directly for those services. The provider is not allowed to charge you to submit the claim.

How to Process a Claim to Medicare

Check your Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) when you receive it in the mail. You can also check your Medicare claims online. Every three months Medicare will mail you a Medicare Summary Notice listing any medical services or supplies that were billed to Medicare within that time frame. If a service or supply does not appear on the MSN, the provider or supplier might not have filed a claim. According to Medicare guidelines, a claim form must be submitted within one calendar year after the year in which you received a medical service or supply.
