Social Security Tax / Medicare Tax and Self

Posted by:  :  Category: Medicare

The United States has entered into social security agreements with foreign countries to coordinate social security coverage and taxation of workers employed for part or all of their working careers in one of the countries. These agreements are commonly referred to as Totalization Agreements. Under these agreements, dual coverage and dual contributions (taxes) for the same work are eliminated. The agreements generally make sure that social security taxes (including self-employment tax) are paid only to one country. You can get more information on the Social Security Administration’s Web site.

Medicare Insurance Careers

Before an agent starts a Medicare insurance career they must understand the differences between Original Medicare and additional Medicare plans provided by private insurance companies. Medicare is our socialized health care system that provides health coverage for individuals aged 65 or older and/or the disabled. Original Medicare is comprised of two parts: Part A which covers hospital bills and Part B that covers doctor bills. Original Medicare is less comprehensive than other health care plans; therefore the majority of seniors sign up for or purchase Medicare insurance policies from private companies to fill the gaps in coverage or provide additional coverage above traditional Medicare.  Agents sell policies such as Medicare supplements, Prescription Drug and Medicare Advantage plans to clients to help them lessen the costs associated with hospitalizations, emergency room visits, doctor visits, prescription drugs, etc.

CMA Health Policy Consultants

Private plans left the market when their reimbursements were capped at or below the per capita rate of public Medicare. CMS failed to learn from that experiment, and maintain the cost of traditional Medicare as the maximum taxpayers would pay for private plans. Instead, since the Medicare Act of 2003 we actually pay private plans more than traditional Medicare. This result is not good for the financial security of the Medicare program or for the federal budget deficit. It’s not good for the vast majority of beneficiaries who continue to choose the traditional Medicare program. It’s not even best for many MA enrollees, particularly those with long-term and chronic conditions, who often get less coverage than they would in traditional Medicare. And remember, by design MA plans have limited networks, so private MA enrollees have fewer choices in physicians and other health care providers than they’d have in traditional Medicare.

Medicare Surtax on Wages and Self

The Additional Medicare Tax was legislated as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and amended by the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010. These two laws reformed the health care market by requiring individuals to obtain health insurance or pay a tax penalty. The additional Medicare tax was included as a revenue raiser in that legislation. At the time the legislation was passed, the Joint Committee on Taxation estimated that the Additional Medicare Tax and the Unearned Income Medicare Contribution Tax would together generate an additional $20.5 billion in tax revenue in the year 2013, the first year that the Medicare surtax would be in effect. What’s Medicare supplement (Medigap) insurance?

Posted by:  :  Category: Medicare

Some Medigap policies also offer coverage for services that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S. If you have Original Medicare and you buy a Medigap policy, Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered health care costs. Then your Medigap policy pays its share.

Medicare Advantage insurance is offered by private insurance companies with a Medicare contract, and replaces Original Medicare Part A and Part B. You must continue to pay your Part B premiums. Medicare Advantage plans typically offer additional benefit options and have less cost-sharing than Original Medicare, and you may have to pay a monthly premium in return for the extra benefits. Medicare Advantage plans come in a variety of formats, such as HMO, PPO and PFFS plans, as well as special needs plans. Medicare beneficiaries can enroll in Medicare Advantage plans if they have Medicare Part A and Part B, but only during designated enrollment periods. These enrollment periods change from time-to-time, so please call us to get the most-up-to-date information.

AARP Medicare Supplement Insurance Premiums

Joan, If you initially worked with a local agent in Florida I would start there. You could call customer service but that will probably be a waste of time. If you are healthy and believe that you would have no problem passing medical underwriting, it may be time to shop. Medicare supplements offer standardized benefits so Plan F for instance will be the same for all companies. As you have learned, there is not necessarily a reward for staying with the same company. Most major companies offering supplements will offer the same level of service and payment of claims. Take this time to see if you can save some money. Call PlanPrescriber at (888) 310-0376 to speak with an agent. They represent most all carriers.

In addition to Medicare supplement insurance, we are pleased to be participating in the Medicare Advantage market. The Medicare Advantage policy is a low cost alternative to a Medicare supplement policy and is especially advantageous for those less than 65 years old. The Private Fee For Service (PFFS) is a type of Advantage plan that allows Medicare recipient to visit any doctor, any hospital, anywhere. Therefore, many Medicare recipients are well served by the lower cost Private Fee For Service plan.

Comparing Medicare Supplement Costs and Premiums

One of the biggest factors affecting the cost of your Medigap premiums is when you enroll. Even if you’re in good health, joining a Medicare Supplement plan when you’re first eligible ensures that you’ll not only get the best price for your coverage, but the best plan selection. If you buy a policy during the Medigap Open Enrollment Period (the six-month period following when a person is 65 and has Part B), you can choose any of the 10 plans available, no matter what your health status is. During this enrollment period, insurers are required by law to cover all pre-existing conditions and cannot deny you coverage or charge you more because of health. These are known as guaranteed issue rights.
