How Medicare Advantage Plans work

Medicare Advantage Plans, sometimes called “Part C” or “MA Plans,” are offered by private companies approved by Medicare. If you join a Medicare Advantage Plan, you still have Medicare. You’ll get your Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) coverage from the Medicare Advantage Plan and not Original Medicare.

Medicare Supplement Plan C

Two things go uncovered with Medicare Supplement Plan C. One is Medicare Part B excess charges. These are doctor expenses that extend beyond what Medicare has allocated for service payment. When excess charges occur, the remainder of the cost is charged directly to the patient. For example, a doctor or physician is allowed to bill up to 15% over the Medicare-approved amount, so that the total cost for services rendered could potentially be 115%. After Medicare pays their reimbursement amount, the remaining amount is paid out-of-pocked by the beneficiary, including the 15% in excess charges.

Learn About Medicare Vision Benefits

Medicare will not cover routine vision exams, period. Medicare is designed similar to other health insurance policies in that they pay for eye examinations when the patient’s complaint or previous diagnosis is medical in nature. "Routine" suggests a simple screening. Although Medicare is starting to develop more and more procedures and exams that are indeed health screenings, for the most part, it does not cover exams when the chief complaint is, "I need new trifocals" or "I need a vision exam." For example, let’s say that at the end of the examination, your doctor diagnoses you with three different eye conditions or diseases. If you had gone into the exam room that day for a "routine" eye exam and stated that you were not having any problems with your eyes, Medicare will not pay for that exam. (Medicare will, however, cover subsequent examinations and tests to follow those previous eye conditions or diseases that were detected.)

The new Plan N is a great alternative to a Medicare Advantage plan.  Plan N might be recommended depending on which state you live in and how much the supplement cost in relation to available Medicare Advantage plans. A plan N will provide more coverage and a very reasonable premium. In Florida we have the lowest rate for plan F & plan N. See the Medicare Supplement Plan chart below. In general, the higher you go up in the plan chart the more Gaps the plan fills. Medicare Supplement Plan F is the most comprehensive supplement plan and there is not a better plan than F. Most people will select a Plan F. However, depending on your personal situation there may be a more cost efficient choice.
